The Republic of Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It consists of more than 17,000 islands, including Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and parts of Borneo and New Guinea. Indonesia is the world's largest island nation. With over 280 million inhabitants, Indonesia is the world's 4th most populous country, as well as the country with the largest Muslim population.
Indonesia consists of thousands of distinct ethnic groups and hundreds of linguistic groups, with the Javanese being the largest. A common identity has developed with the motto "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" ("Unity in Diversity" literally "many, yet one"), defined by a national language, cultural diversity, religious pluralism within a Muslim-majority population, and a history of colonialism and rebellion against it.
Indonesia has a rich kite heritage. Bali is the most famous place for kite flying, but all of the major islands of Indonesia have their own distinct traditions with different types of kites. In addition to being a form of entertainment, traditional Indonesian kites are also used in religious rituals and are a source of livelihood for certain communities.
