The first major themed event was held in 2017, when 24 Japanese kite makers visited Fanø to fly kites from different regions of Japan, each with their own kite traditions.
Exhibitions, lectures and workshops were also held for kite makers and children from Fanø.
The types of kites that could be experienced on the beach were:
Shirone-Dako (long rectangular kite), Tahara-dako (giant kite), Edo-Dako (kite style from Tokyo), Rokkaku-Dako (popular hexagonal kite), Tsugaru-Dako (very beautifully decorated kite) and Tori-Dako (bird kite)
The participating kitefliers were:
